Hi friends,
Welcome to the new year! Along with a new year comes a new chance for us to recommit to our writing practice. This month, we’ll renew our creative practice by endeavoring to write more — whether that be more words, more sessions, or more days of the month. So let’s get to it!
A Brief Recap of How to Participate
As a quick reminder, this is a month-long, asynchronous writing challenge. As part of the challenge, there will be friendly competition, group chats to celebrate each other’s wins, and a small prize for those who write the most words, the most minutes, and the most days of the month. (See below for more details.)
First, I gently suggest deciding what you’d like to get out of this challenge. Are you trying to complete a first draft in record time? Are you looking to write more frequently throughout the month? Or do you just want to join a fun group of writers? Any and all of these options are available to you, so choose whatever will help you get the most out of this month.
Write!
Additional ways to participate
If you’d like to participate in our friendly writing competition, record your session time, date, and word count in our Writing Tracker spreadsheet. I highly recommend bookmarking it in your browser so you don’t have to return to this newsletter to find the link.
Remember to track each writing session in its own line and only edit your own sessions.
✨ Update! ✨ To add to the fun, I’m giving away a free book at the end of the month to the leader in each of our categories — words written, time written, and days written. The winner gets to pick the book of their choice from the options below!
Here After by Amy Lin
A Book of Common Prayer by Joan Didion
Dark Money by Jane Mayer
Catch and Kill by Ronan Farrow
Somebody’s Daughter by Ashley C. Ford
The Man Who Could Move Clouds by Ingrid Rojas Contreras
The Rabbit Hutch by Tess Gunty
Hourglass by Dani Shapiro
Weather by Jenny Offill
If you haven’t already, subscribe to this newsletter to participate in our weekly chat and encourage your fellow writers! The chat is only accessible to subscribers.
On January 5th, I’ll start our first subscriber chat to see how the first few days of the challenge are going! You can join the chat by clicking the link below.
Ready to write more this year? Let’s go!
For those who aren’t participating in the challenge, Beyond the Page will be back to its regularly scheduled programming on January 10 with a roundup of my favorite reads in 2024.
